Piecing and Quilting
BabyLock & Bernina Serger Club – May 2024
This is the first month of a two-month project. You have many options for the quilt.
Options
1 – The 3-dimensional Bow Tie Quilt blocks are one option for quilting. They are easy to make and stitch up very quickly. You can make a few sample blocks or a whole quilt. This month, I’ll demo how to make the block and how to do stitch-and-flip quilting.
2 – The Jelly Roll Race Quilt is usually done with a standard sewing machine, but this is a perfect serger project. It starts with a Jelly Roll – for those who are not quilters, it is a pre-cut collection of quilting fabric cut into strips that measure 2.5” by the width of fabric (approximately 40″ – 44”). Jelly Rolls are the perfect way to sample all the prints in a fabric line or collection. We will join the strips end to end and then the length to make 4 strip sets and then use the stitch and flip method for the quilting. The finished size of your quilt will depend on how many strips you start with and the fabric width; refer to the chart to see the sizes and yardage you will need.
3 – The Charm Pack Quilt is fast and easy and requires very little cutting! It is a perfect quilt to practice your serger piecing. Two charm packs make a baby-size quilt. This month, I’ll demo how to make the block and how to do stitch-and-flip quilting.
Next month, I’ll demonstrate how to use your serger and fusible thread to make binding quick and easy. You can also use a Decorative overlock for the edge finish. If you have a BabyLock serger with the Wave stitch, this is a perfect place to use it!
